In accordance with Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS S 1037: 1998), a newspaper is placed inside the cabinet while the cabinet is subjected to fire testing for no less than 1 hour. Externally, the temperature is raised to 1000°C and monitored at 115°C. This is substantially lower than the upper temperature limit of 180°C for paper document protection filing systems. Upon test completion, the newspaper is still fully legible with no change in colour.

In accordance with Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS S 1037: 1998), a 3.5" computer diskette is placed in the bottom of the drawer while the cabinet is subjected to fire testing for no less than 1 hour. Externally, the temperature is raised to 1000°C and monitored internally at 44°C. This is substantially lower than the upper temperature limit of 52°C for disc protection filing cabinets. Upon test completion, the disc is found intact with the stored data being fully accessible.
